Video Game Review: A Hat in Time

A little less than a year ago, Gears for Breakfast released this little gem for the world to enjoy. And enjoy it I have. If you’ve never heard or seen A Hat in Time before, it is a 3-D action platformer made in the same vain as other classics such as Super Mario 64 and Banjo Kazooie. The game is full of colorful level, giant worlds to explore, an overabundance of collectibles and some of the most engaging characters I have seen in a platformer.
My style of review is like having a casual conversation, so lets discuss what the game does right and wrong.
The Right
Exploration– This is one of the most important factors to me when determining the fun factor of a game. The game features 4 massive worlds plus a fifth level that is linear instead of a sandbox. Yes most games feature 10+ worlds, but the worlds you’ll find in A Hat in Time are vibrant, unique, and full of charm. Mafia Town is still a world I’ll load up and run around in to this day. The freedom of movement only aids this category as well. Featuring double jumps, aerial dashes, and wall climbing, the open worlds are super fun to traverse. It never gets old dashing around the levels.

Characters- I don’t always expect much from the supporting cast from platformers, however almost every character in this game is memorable and just adds to the personality that is A Hat is Time. The Snatcher is probably my favorite character, but the conductor and DJ Grooves rivalry, the alien-fearing Mafia, and the interesting antihero Mustache Girl, form a rainbow of charm that help carry the game.

Collectibles- Collectibles. You either love them or hate them. I think Gears for Breakfast absolutely nailed the collectibles that are hidden throughout the game. The collectibles are the Time Pieces (think stars from Super Mario), Pons (think coins from Super Mario) and Rift Tokens (I don’t really have a comparison, but its a second currency). Not collectibles per se, but there are several hats she can equip to give her powers. For example, she has a sprint cap that lets her move faster while say, the brewers cap gives her the ability to launch projectiles. There’s also dyes that change her costume color and style. I find this to be the perfect blend. There’s enough collectibles to help cover the level and motivate you to explore without making it feel like a chore. This really goes a long way in a game styled like this.

The Wrong
It is short… for now. 5 worlds and a nice hub world means the game is of fair length. However, as a gamer, you never want a game to end. However, the next wave of DLC/update says it roll out 2 new worlds. Of course I am looking forward to this. This small blemish may soon be erased.
Untapped Potential– When I was reading about the game, I remember reading about using the Time pieces to turn back time and such. It comes up from time to time, but it seems like its mostly in the background. This seems to be a story element and not a gameplay mechanic. I could be misremembering something, but it will feels like there were some time alerting mechanics they could have expanded upon.
Really, these are my only real complaints. The game is just a perfect blend of elements I love in video games. Anything else I say from here would just be reiterating earlier thoughts. If you played early platformers from the N64/Gamecube, PS1/PS2 era, you owe it to yourself to get this game. A Hat in Time is available on the steam store for just $29.99 and the PS4 and Xbox One for $29.99 as well. I’m not going to assign a score but just know this game is close to perfect. I keep fluctuating somewhere between 9 out of 10 to 10 out of 10. Yeah, it really is a great game.
Be on the look out for my youtube review on channel in the near future.
Thank you
Top 5 Characters to add to Super Smash Brothers Switch!

With E3 right around the corner, and a I am sure a Nintendo Direct will sneak out before than, we should probably discuss this topic before anymore leaks happen.
I will be doing the top 5 character’s I want added to smash as well as a few honorable mentions.
#5 Wonder Red (From Wonderful 101)
I recently did a Try Out Thursday a few weeks back for the Wonderful 101. I love this idea and I feel like he is on of the easiest locks for the new roster. 1 big reason is because his move set is easy enough because he is from a fighting game. His final smash could even be his super punch
.
The second reason is due to some hype and rumors of the Wonderful 101 coming to switch. Why not use Smash 5 as a launch pad for advertising the series. There was hype for this game, but due to the Wii U having bad sells not many people got to play this game. Porting it over to the switch just seems like common sense, and featuring the main protagonist seems natural.
#4 A new Pokemon character. (From the Pokemon Series)
This is a fun one to discuss. We could talk forever about which of the over 800 Pokemon will grace the newest roster. I, for one, would love for it to be a sneak peek into Gen 8. Heck, make a stage based off a new city. Another school of thought I’ve seen is a Gen 7 pokemon. These would be okemons from Sun and Moon. So I am going to give you guys my pick for a Gen 7 Pokemon. I’ll go with Tapu Koko for now. There is honestly 5 or so I could put in this spot (maybe an idea for another post?) but for now I’ll put Tapu KoKo
He is undoubtly one of the coolest Pokemons from the Alolan region. I am actually not sure how confident I am in this pick solely due to the fact that Pikachu will, without a doubt, be on the official roster.
I have a strange feeling this spot could be a Generation 1 Pokemon. The Kanto hype is real with Gamefreak and I am little worried they are trying to play it safe. What Kanto Pokemon would I give it to? Dragonite, of course.
In my opinion Dragon type has been the defining type for Pokemon (maybe psychic too). Yet, a dragon pokemon has yet to appear on the roster. He seems like a safe bet if they go with with a Kanto pokemon. Another prediction could be that Mewtwo is back without having to jump through the DLC hoop.
#3 Funky Kong (Donkey Kong Series notably Tropical Freeze)
Here’s another one like Wonder Red. They just ported Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze to the switch. One of the big add on’s is the Funky Mode. He is a really awesome character who just brings good vibes the second he hits the screen. Other than that I don’t have a whole lot to say. DK is one of their best selling games, Funky is a great character, and free advertisement. All this seems like a no brainer. Isn’t that right Funky
#2 The Champions (From Zelda: Breath of the Wild)
The Champions are from the latest Zelda game. They are really cool characters that all have their own personalities and attitudes. They feel like a call back to the sages from Ocarina of Time. It is kinda hard to imagine all four of them getting in, but I would assume they are popular enough to justify it.
Mipha (The Zora aka the red fish lady) is the character I think who has the hardest chance of getting added as she is healer. However, contrary I could see Link being granted all the champions powers. Mipha’s grace could reduce some of the precentage, Revali Gale could be Link’s recovery. Durak’s Protection could allow Link to reflect projectiles. Urbosa’s Fury could be his final smash.
Theres a couple of cool ways I could see them handling the Champions. One way or another, this is the safest of safe bets. They will be in the game whether they are roster characters or assist trophies.
Honorable mentions
Banjo Kazooie (From the Banjo Kazooie series)
Geno (From Super Mario RPG)
![]()
Knuckles (From the Sonic series)
I don’t have many memories with these characters. I’ve never owned any of their games really, but they are all either beloved or high level profile characters that would add charm and increase the wealth of characters on the roster. It seems like with each new Smash fan outcry increases for characters like Geno and Banjo.
#1 Hat Kid

Of course it is Hat Kid. I love her death and A Hat in Time has easily become a top 5 game in my eyes. Her umbrella would be her attack. She has a grapple for her recovery. She can equip badges in the game which gives her access to a scooter, a magnet like field to suck in items, and even the ability to kamehameha (for real). Characters always have alternative colors and costumes and Hat Kid lends herself perfectly to this as well. She has many hats which could serve as alternative costumes. She has the sprint cap which could make her run faster like the bunny hood. She has the brewer’s cap which could give her access to a projectile attack. She even has a time stop hat but that might be too powerful. All these hats could also simply be cosmetic in nature instead to simplify things. Either way, I see so much potential for the little Hat Kid that I hope she finds her way on the roster!
So that’s my top 5 characters I want added to smash. Who are yours? Let me know down in the comments.
Thanks for reading my post! Have a great day.
More post from me:
Manga Review: My Hero Academia
Games I want on the N64 Mini/Classic
Games I want on the N64 Mini/Classic
Now, we are a little behind on the speculative list, but since nothing is officially official I figured we could dive in and try to form a list of awesome N64 games.
DK 64 and Diddy Kong Racing are titles I’ve heard tossed around, so I am assuming there is no copyright issues here. Still, I am going to leave them off my list for the time being.
So, let’s get this list underway:

The Easy Ones:
Super Mario 64
LoZ: Orarina of Time
LoZ: Majora’s Mask
Paper Mario
Star Fox
Super Smash Brothers
Pilot Wings 64 (Or Wave Racer 64)
Mario Kart 64

In my opinion, these are the easy ones. Obviously, if you included Rare titles Golden Eye, Conker, and Banjo Kazooie would probably be auto includes as well. Super Mario 64, Oracina of Time, and Major’s Mask are the easiest includes in this list. The N64 is notorious for it’s lack of RPGs, so in my opinion Paper Mario has to be an auto include (the others being Ogre Battle and Quest 64). Rounding out our auto includes are some multiplayer games. Pilot Wings 64 was a launch title for the system, though I have never played it. Mario Kart 64 and Smash 64 are some of the best multiplayer experiences you will find on the console.
Tier 2
These games are good and I enjoy them. i am sure a few of these games will make the official list, if not all.
F-Zero X
Kirby 64
Mario Party 2
Mario Tennis
Yoshi’s Story
Pokemon Stadium 1 or 2 (Or both!)

This rounds out my Tier 2. I think there is high chance for Yoshi’s Story, Kirby 64, and F-Zero. I will admit I never played F-Zero, I very much enjoyed Kirby 64 and Yoshi’s Story even to this day. Mario Party 2 is my favorite in the series and would get my nod (though I assume any of the 3 are up for grabs). Now, I put Mario Tennis on here as a placeholder. I never played the N64 Mario Sports games. I do have a feeling we will get one though (but I could also see this slot getting left off the official list).
Third Party Games/Racing Games/Wrestling Games
I grew up with a positive perspective on the N64, but if there is one thing I have heard is that the N64’s tiny library was bogged down by the abundance of racing and wrestling games and the lack of 3rd party games. Let’s take a look at what they have to offer.
Turok
Cruis’n USA/Beetle Adventure Racing (Or insert your favorite race game here)
WCW/mWo Revenge
Star Wars
NBA Hangtime

You could argue if a sports game will finally make it on a classic console, the N64’s library might be just small enough that we see one. The bigger question is will it be a Mario or traditional sports title. People still rave about the memories of playing 4 player wrestling games. My brother, my 2 cousins, and myself played WCW/mWo Revenge so that’s why it is slotted in this spot. Honestly, I really only played Mario Kart and Diddy Kong Racing. I did however play Cruis’n USA some so that is why it makes my list. Rounding out my sports title is NBA Hangtime as we put many hours into its unique style of basketball. We will probably miss out on Golden Eye so I am throwing Turok in this slot. My dad also played through all the Turok games when I was kid, so of course we got a soft spot.
Hidden Gems or Sleeeper Picks?
My faith in these picks are little, but it would be cool to see some or even 1. However, I am not holding my breath.
Rayman 2
Mischief Maker
Glover
Harvest Moon 64
Body Harvest
Bomberman 64
Blast Corp
Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon
Space Station Silicon Valley

I think the only game that stands a chance is Harvest Moon 64. The game I spent the most time with is Glover. It was frustrating, but it was different. Sadly, I never really got to play most of these games which is why I would love for a few to sneak in like Space Station or Mystic Ninja. A closing thought on sleeper picks, I thought about including expensive games such as Clay Fighters or Bomberman 64, but I am not sure it will happen (or if even should happen).
So before we give our official list I should talk about Pokemon Snap. I guess in hindsight I’d throw it in Tier 2, but I just cannot figure out what category I want it in. Now let’s narrow this list down.
Super Mario 64
LoZ: Orarina of Time
LoZ: Majora’s Mask
Paper Mario
Star Fox
Super Smash Brothers
Pilot Wings 64 (Or Wave Racer 64)
Mario Kart 64
F-Zero X
Yoshi’s Story
Kirby 64
Pokemon Stadium
Pokemon Stadium 2
Pokemon Snap
Mario Tennis
Turok
Cruis’n USA
WCW/mWo Revenge
Star Wars
Harvest Moon 64
Wow, that’s 20 games. Clearly, some are going to get left off. I think Nintendo will find a balance between games of nostalgia and games that are actually great. Some of these games are interchangeable but I picked the ones I remembered the most fondly. Yet again, WCW could be any wrestling Game. If we get DK and Diddy Kong Racing, than I think you probably take off Cruis’n USA and either WCW or Star Wars. Maybe.
Let me know what you guys think. I don’t think we have a lot of room for non-Nintendo titles but I think 1 or 2 could make it on the list. Anyway, comment which games you want to see or how many games you think will be on the N64 Classic.
Thank you for reading! Have a great day!

Let’s Talk: Pokemon Trailer.
The latest trailer of Pokemon Sun and Moon came out today, so check it out.
The question of the day is: Which starter had the craziest super move? I, personally, am team water, but turning the area into a WWE match and dropping a hundred arrows on your foe’s corpses is pretty sweet as well.
Bonus question: What is Dugtrio’s band name?

Lets Talk: New Nintendo Console!
So, the Nintendo Switch or NX or whatever you would like to call it has been revealed. Be sure to go check out the release trailer if you have not already.

This is definitely something worth talking about. I give Nintendo the benefit of the doubt, so until the actual release, I will be waiting with great excitement. I only just watched the video and there was a lot to digest. I, in no way, have all the details, nor have been following it very attentively. With that in mind, I am going to turn the discussion over to you guys.
What do you guys think of this new console? Will it reinvent the home console? Do you believe it is just a gimmick? Will this revitalize Nintendo or officially run them out of business. I’ll do a follow up blog once I’ve viewed more of the games and understand the features better.
I’ll leave you with some of my early thoughts to generate discussions.

Games Showcased: Obviously, Breath of the Wild is the money maker. Nintendo, in my opinion, was smart holding onto this big boy. It can help get the Switch off on the right leg. Remakes of great Wii U games seem plentiful. Mario Kart and Splatoon to headlined this. I missed Splatoon on the Wii U so this might be a good chance for me to pick it up. I typically do not do remakes unless it is of games I love. However, I know remakes helped carry Xbox One and PS4 early on with the Last of Us remake as well as the Master Chief Collection. I do not know if that was Mario remake showcased or a new title. They also showed an NBA game as well as 1st person mid evil looking game.
Mechanics/Portability: This has been a highly debated topic sense the Wii tried to reinvent gaming back in the day. However, this one looks like it makes sense. The “On the go” gaming looks like a good selling point. I mean, who doesnt want to play video games in cars? I think it is great and they have a traditional controller if this does not interest you. The real question is will this hurt the 3DS? I dont know because Pokemon should keep the 3DS alive.
So, If Nintendo has lost you over the years, what does this console have to do to win you over? The biggest fault I have with Nintendo is not the hardware, but the games. The first party’s are still amazing and the Switch is shaping up to keep that trend alive, but they do need a bigger 3rd party support. I have a One because I too need to branch out at times. Fallout 4 and Witcher are great games Wii U owners will never get to experience.
Show me great 3rd party support and this console should save Nintendo. They have moved past naming everything Wii, so hopefully there is no marketing disasters.
Here’s to hoping March is a great month for gaming!
My Thoughts: Brand New Pokemons!
Oh boy, I’m back!
New Pokemons got spoiled today and hey, were all Pokemon nerds one way or the other so lets jump into this!
Anytime we get treated to new Pokemons, it’s a good day… except, when it’s not. Okay, I’m probably being over critical here (after all Game Freak can just kill it off whenever they feel like it). It does feel like GF is just throwing together weird “stuff” and slapping Pokemon on it. If you havent seen them yet, I will be providing pictures of each as well as my thoughts.
Okay, first up! Togedemaru: Electric/Steel

(I do not own any copyrights to pictures displayed. All credit goes to their owners)
So, I mean cute factor is there I suppose, and I want to lean on the side of liking him, but this type of pokemon seems overplayed. Anyway, not too much to say. Time will tell I suppose. Bonus Points for being part steel
Score: 5 out of 10
Next, Cutiefly: Bug/Fairy
Where do I start. I actually do not mind the design of this pokemon. Nice, early bugish pokemon to get the team going. But this name man. Cutiepie? I do not know if it’s suppose to be a play on words with the type of bug/insect its suppose to be or just cashing in on the cute factor, but I am so blah on the name.
Design score: 5 out of 10
Name Score: 1 out of 10
Overall score: 4 out of 10
Drampa: Normal/Dragon

At first glance, this one was my favorite. Drampa is kind of Dopey and laxed looking, which kind of puts me on the fence. Another Pokemon I really want to like. He is Normal/Dragon and if he wants to be memorable, he will have to be anything but normal. I wanted something fierce, but if he pans out well I will accept him. This does give him poor typing for steels, but oh well.
Drampa Hype: 8 out of 10
Overall Score: 7.5 out of 10
Bruxish: Water/Psychic

Another meh looking Pokemon that has potential at least. Water and Psychic make for some of my favorite types and Dazzle looks exciting. Goodbye sucker punch and quick attack. It’s new move looks interesting as well.
Score: 7 out of 10
Charjabug: Bug/Electric

Well, we were on a roll and now… Char-Ja-Bug (I assume this is how it’s pronounced). Man, a battery Pokemon actually sounds pretty spot on with this tech world we live in, but somehow out of place if the world is suppose to be a tropical getaway. Design wise, just mediocre. Concept is actually cool. Good news to him, he evolves into an extremely cool Pokemon!
Score: 3 out 10
Vikavolt: Bug/Electric

Okay, so Charjabug kind of cramped our style, but he’s back as this nice hulking dude. Pretty excited about this guy. Imma bug kind of guy and this guy is getting me kinda pumped despite a fairly average to slightly above average pool of monsters. Really hoping he pans out into something playable and we finally get a great new bug pokemon.
Bug Hype: Is Real.
Overall score: 8 out of 10
Lastly, Tapu Koko Electric/Fairy
I’m saving prehaps the most intriguing for last. In a day where they showcased so many electric and/or fairy Pokemons (only two of the pokemons did not have some ties to electric or Fairy), this guy may be the best. Out of the seven, Drampa is my pick to actually be useful, while Vikavolt is the one I’m hoping they dont screw up. But Tapu Koko looks to be the one they just straight up nailed. Seriously, I love everything about this guy except his typing. Sure he joins Dedenne as the only other electric fairy but I was rooting for fire. Fire/Bug, Fire/Electric or Fire/Fairy all look sweet in this spot, but alas, oh well. No big deal. I think he will be the best of these 7.

Score: 9 out of 10.
So there you have. Four Pokemons scoring at least a 7. Is this a good sign, or just inflated by lack of real competition? We shall see.
Please, leave a comment or like if you enjoy this style of blogs! I want to do these for each round of spoilers. The hype is real.
Thanks for taking the time to read this.
Let’s Talk: BatmanVSuperman!
Oh boy. It’s that time. Sorry this is so late.

(I do not own any rights to the images used throughout this article. All rights belong to the original creators)
Lets do a little background info as to why I am even doing this review and why I am a little annoyed. For starters, when characters got leaked(Wonder Woman and such). Everyone got so pumped. In the final days leading up to BvS the same people started saying the plot was convoluted and the cast was crowded and so on and so on. In fact, that seems to be the main reason it’s getting crapped on. So the way I see things is that big reviewers hyped it up when they knew they were going to crap all over it. Though I tend to stay away from big time reviewers and form my own opinion (and you should too!)
Spoilers: Yes. Enough to warrant this message anyway.
Quick note: I am not a huge Superman fan nor do I pretend to be so I will mostly be reviewing this as a movie and not a strict faithful retelling of the comics.
Let’s get down to the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.
The Good:
The action! It’s the same Zack Synder here who directed The Watchmen and 300 among other movies as well. Anyway my point is the action is good. My favorite fight scene was the final Batman vs Superman fight. Watching Batman beat Superman to a pulp was wonderful (i prefer Batman over Superman honestly).

Ben Affleck. I loved the Dark Knight with Christian Bale and I so scared when they announced a new Batman. But boy, Ben was everything I wanted from a Batman. The old, edgy, push the chips to the center of the table Batman was wonderful. He stole the show in my opinion.

Visuals. The visuals were beautiful. I think notably the final action scene against Doomsday looked really pretty(If that’s the right word for it). The movie is probably underrated as far as color goes. There’s a series of scenes where they are showing the good Superman has done and the color is ominous and heavenly. When the citizens are on the roof and there’s a massive flood and the woman is holding out her hand. The camera then pans to show Superman in the sky. Yes, it is very metaphoric but also a gorgeous scene on it’s own.

The Bad
The Betrayal of Superman- To me, this is the part where the script/plot is the weakest. The propose makes sense. The goal is to turn Superman from a god to a devil. Simple enough. I see what they were going for. But I was not overly convinced by them. The shootout in the desert and the bombing of the court just seemed forced.
Lex Luthor

I wanted this to be awesome and it started out awesome. I should start with a disclaimer. I do not honestly know that much about Lex. I should say as far as backstory and motivation goes in the comic. This is just another point where the script missed the mark. So, Lex was trying to ruin Superman’s image. He wanted to show people Superman was not for the people. How do you do this? I’ll borrow a quote from my good friend the Joker. “It’s simple, uh we kill the Batman”. This sounds epic in theory. Have Superman bring the bat’s head to Lex. Batman being the metaphor for man. The introduction to a new villain and a similar name brought this to a halt. Anyway he seemed to be caught in this weird mix between the insanity of the Joker and the ambition of Kingpin . That might just be me?
The Ugly
Villains- If you avoided spoilers on the villains up to this point, stop reading now. If you’re interested, keep reading. Okay so Superman has to fight Batman, Lex, and Doomsday. This is the part where the plot gets crowded in my opinion. They should’ve just cut out Doomsday. I mean he’s famous for being the guy to “Kill Superman”. It was waaaaay too early to bring in Doomsday. The Batman vs Superman angle was amazing and the first two hours is fantastic. However, the addition of Doomsday I think is where the plot went too far. I know what you’re thinking, we needed Doomsday to bring the Justice League together. Here’s one alternative. They had been hinting at The Flash, Cyborg, and Aquaman. Aquaman should’ve come out and beat them both to pieces and tell them to grow up. The camera kept hinting at the the pool where they throw the spear. Have Aquaman grab the spear, hit Superman, and than beat Batman to a pulp. Boom. No need to add Doomsday, or anything like that. or B. Have Lex build his combat suit and make Superman and Batman fight him. I do not know the best course, but they should’ve cut Doomsday. He is way to high profile of a villain to be a second tier baddie.

MARTHA- Yeah, this scene got made fun of and rightfully so. I know Bruce missed his mommy and we get constant flashback of her grave so it’s not out of place or anything like that, but it’s two titans dueling it out to the death and a single name makes them buddy buddy. Now if you enjoy this scene and this resolution, than great! But it was just kinda cheesy to me.
Final Review: 7.5/10

It’s not terrible and probably not as bad as everyone is making it out to be. The movie is visually breath taking and has a nice mix of developing plot and juicy action. Bruce is well developed and Lex is off to an okay start. I assume he will play a bigger role in future films. Also, if they cut the Doomsday part and just replace it with something other than Doomsday, this movie would probably be an 8 or 9.
So what is your guys opinions? Was it good, bad, or just straight up ugly?
Happy Pokemon Day

It’s Pokemon day, which means Pokemon has officially taken up your news feed on your social media.
Pokemon keeps posting about all the ways to celebrate and people keep posting fan made videos of some form of pokemon.
So this got me thinking I should ask you guys how you’re celebrating Pokemon Day?
Leave a comment below. Whether its having friends over to battle/trade, binge watching the anime, or dusting off that gameboy color and giving the classics another go. Whatever you’re doing, have fun doing
Thanks for taking the time to read this!
Lets Talk: Pokemon Sun and Moon
Pokemon junkies have been making their theories and predictions forever about gen 7. If you’re like me, I had a feeling this year was gonna be the year. It’s Pokemon’s 20 anniversary and it might be the best year for pokemon to date. With new pokemons, new 3ds with red, blue and yellow, the promo packages for the tcg, and pokemon go. Getting gen 7 just seems like icing on the cake.
In the initial trailer, no gameplay footage has been released, but the direction they took is a beyond perfect first glimpse. It recaps the first 20 years of pokemon in a spectacular fashion. It shows people on their original gameboys pulling out link cables to trade, all the way to online battling of today. It captures the impact pokemon has had on a generation. It shows a dad and daughter playing together, it shows friends gathering around their friend as he ascends to victory, and everything in between is enveloped with vintage gameplay from all the retro games.
It’s a great reflection on a franchise that has touched countless amount of people. I am beyond excited for game play footage as well as new pokemon in the coming days. Check their twitter for the new video!
