DVDs From My Grandfather

Yesterday’s post was about my grandfather’s passing. He was a movie man. He was known in the family for his wall of movies. I may try to get a picture of the wall next time I go to my grandmother’s.

Anyway, the whole family went over to her house after his funeral. I told her I wanted some of the DVDs as keepsakes of him. She let me get a few. I told her my brother and I would gladly inherit them if she chooses to move on from them. Currently, I don’t know if she has decided on keeping them, selling them, donating them etc. My brother and I want them to stay in the family, but she will have the finally say. He had a great collection of TV series like Smallville, 24, X Files, and Lost. I didn’t really get a good look at all the films he owned, but here’s what I landed on.

My grandparents were the first collectors I knew. He collected DVDs and my grandmother collected thimbles. My grandmother is the person who taught me about eBay and shelves to present your collections and such. So in a way, I blame my collective personality on them haha. I always knew when they passed I wanted to own parts of their collections. My grandfather even wrote his initials on a few of the cases so those seem very special. Its the only part of him I have left.

Have any of you inherited things like collectibles from loved ones who have passed away? I worked in a hobby shop where plenty of people traded in baseball cards, comics, you name it from loved ones who have passed away. But that’s a post for a future date.

Anyway, thanks for reading. Have a great day!

Rest in Peace, Pawpaw

Hey guys. My grandfather [or Pawpaw as we say down here in the South.] passed away at 70 Friday to failing health. He battled several health problems over the past 10 years or so. This includes dementia and at least two forms of cancer as well as several just nagging pains. We are all devastated, but oddly at peace that he is no longer in pain. Because it was very hard on him this last year. Yesterday, our family from all over the country were able to get together and reminiscent over his life. Today is his funeral. I’ll get to be a pallbearer for him and that’s special.

My grandfather

He loved music, though he had stopped drumming by the time I was born. He was crafty and a handyman. I had a bunch of action figures as a kid. He built me a wooden chest to keep them in when I was around 10. I’ve kept that box my whole life and now I’m glad I have. He was funny and always joking. He was always so loving on my 4 year old daughter. I think that’s one of the sadder things. He loved her, but unfortunately passed before her ability to make core memories has really developed.

Mawmaw and Pawpaw with our daughter.

Remember to tell your loved one you appreciate them. In a way, we can say his passing was expected. Like I said, this had been coming for years. We even knew he was going on end of life hospice. But we wre all planning to go see him at the hospice center this weekend. He died the first day he arrived there. So in a way, none of expected it to happen so soon.

With that in mind, tell your loved one you love and appreciate them. You never know when it will be the last time.

Anyway, regularly schedule blogs will continue tomorrow. Thank you for reading. Have a great day.

Upcoming Posts

Hi guys. I’m keeping this simple. I’m not going to say hey were back, or expect a lot of posts. I wish I was. However, momentum is a hard thing to pin down. I’m still working on my own personal writing. Novels are tricky because of that momentum part I was just talking about. But I’ve written a couple of short stories. I’m still working on developing as a story teller and finishing these stories. I’m also trying to become a better editor.

With that said, I have a few blog ideas. I appreciate and respect anyone who reads these and comments or likes them even though I am super inconsistent. If you like my posts, I have hundreds of post over nearly a decade or so of writing. So there’s plenty to enjoy on here.

So, I have a couple of blog ideas kicking around. My plan is to get up my “Reaction of IGN’s Top 100 Nintendo Games” tomorrow. The video is already live on my Youtube Channel here. Then some others I’m working on “Looking Back at Kirby Air Ride”, “What Was the Best Year of the Nintendo Switch” and “3D Games That Returned to Their 2D Roots”. Those blogs are being worked on or are already done and just need to be edited and push through. So I feel somewhat confident in those. Keep your eyes peeled to see if I squeeze out a few more.

Thank you guys for reading!

Firing it Back Up (Life Update!)

Where do we start? I started this blog about 10 years ago or so and have had varying degrees of motivation. I’ve always said running my YouTube channel was my main side hobby and the blog has often taken backseats when I’m in a YouTube mood or when I was really having to work a lot for my old company.

Well, a couple of things have happened. A. I left my old job. Me, my wife and kids moved 1 state over to be closer to my dad. B. My wife was the one who landed a job when we moved, so I have the honor of being a stay at home dad for now.

Next, and this is sadly unfortunate. My PC didn’t survive the move. I’m thinking the graphic card died (though maybe it just got roughed up from the move). Either way I haven’t been able to resolve the issue yet. That is unfortunate because I wanted to take this time to get better at video editing as well as continue to further my YouTube channel. I also prefer writing on PC, but at least I can still publish my blog via my phone so not all is lost.

Well, I’ve also taken to trying to write bigger projects. I am currently writing what I hope will turn into a comic book. My wife and I will try to run independently as well as writing an all ages fantasy story for my daughter. Those are both ambitious for me, but something I’d like to do.

Some topics I hope to return to the blog are: Manga Monday, Random Anime Review Wednesdays, and Top Five Fridays. I may add TCGs back into the mix. However, leaving my old job has limited my interaction with them lately.

When the blog started, it was all about video games, mangas, and anime. I’ll try to do a post talking more about what I’ve read, watched, and played during my hiatus. I have several blog topics saved from where I wrote YouTube scripts that are easy to turn into blog posts.

I’ve also had a second kid. Something I feel like I haven’t really posted about.

Lastly, if there’s anything you want the blog to focus more on, let me know. Right now I’m into retro games (Xbox, PS2, N64, Gamecube), watching One Piece to try to get current (episode 812), and watching my Switch 2 pre order everyday to make sure it doesnt get canceled.

Lately, I haven’t really been in a writing for the blog mood. As described, I’ve already mentioned the things that currently interest me in writing. However, while I wait to see what I’m doing about my PC, the blog may become my outlet to talk about mangas and video games.

Expect blogs to return starting Monday with some sort of Manga Monday update. Some post may or may not trickle out over the next week.

I’m also trying the keto diet this summer, coupled with walking 10,000 steps a day and planning our family’s 2nd Disney World vacation. So, if you’d like to see me make posts about that, just let me know.

I think that’s everything to cover today. If you happen to read this, give me some ideas. Otherwise, expect Manga Mondays and topics about video games to start pouring out later next week.

Thank you for reading. Have a great day. Subscribe to the DaHubbz YouTube channel to see the content I was making the last few years.

My cat, Elizabeth, has passed away.

Hey guys. Yall know that sometimes I use this blog as a timestamp, snapshot in time of my life. My cat passed away last night at the vet. Her lungs collapsed, causing her breathing complications. She had to be put on a ventilator. She was already too critical at that point to run tests on her. She seems to have died from heart complications.

I love you, Elizabeth
This is a mood.
She loved boxes.
Holding daddy’s hand

I got her shortly after starting the blog. It was around the fall of 2015. So she was roughly 9 years old. She was deeply loved and will be missed. My daughter is 2 and is able to bound with them. She had trouble saying Elizabeth, all she could say is “Biscuit”. So the name did stick. Of course, since we’ve left the vet my daughter has asked me 15 times “Where’s Biscuit”. Elizabeth’s sister cat has tumors and will be meeting with a specialist Tuesday to discuss options, as this would be her second surgery in 8 months.

Elizabeth and Eevee
They were inseparable
And always working together

It’s wild to think they were healthy and carefree in October. Now they’re both getting worn down. Time flies too fast sometimes.

My wife and I were just reminiscing about the day we got them, Eevee and Elizabeth. My wife wanted a calico cat. Well, it just so happens a massive litter of short black hair cats were dropped off the same day we went to the shelter. My wife picked her out her calico cat. The person running the shelter said if we took one of the black cats, we could get both for free. So we went back to grab a second cat. She asked me which one to get. I told her to get the cat that seemed the most eager to come with us. She reached her hand into the cage and pulled out Elizabeth. Our life was forever changed that day as Elizabeth became my cat. She was moody and filled with angst, but she was mine.

I miss you, Elizabeth.

How’s Life Been

A few months back, it became very clear to me I was the best employee at my small, local job. I had a decision to make. Go all in on work and focus on it, try to get a raise, and distance myself from co-workers. Or, keep living a life where YouTube and the blog are just kinda durdling about as well as work. I chose to really hone in on work. What a journey it has been. I ended up getting a $2 raise, thus becoming the highest paid employee there. Mission accomplished. But it was a real grinding task. It compromised a lot of my mental and physical health. That’s because there was stuff going on in the background.

Namely, the company is doing poorly financially. As an employee and not an owner, it’s tough to say how rough. It’s a ma and pa store that never figured out all the financial parts of the business. And the economy is all over the place right now (more on this later). But this has made me go “All this hard work, just to get to here?”. It’s got me questioning a lot.

Next, my Brother-in-Law passed away essentially two months ago. He was battling poor health, but we still didn’t expect it when it finally did happen. Jessica took that week off to recover. When the following Monday came around, she was informed that the company she worked for was going out of business. She was out of a job 2 days later. A business in the same industry swooped up and let Jessica apply for one of their positions. We thought, “Oh, what a blessing.” Well, two months later, and she still has not started. I’ll leave the personal shots out of it, but let’s just say it isn’t Jessica’s fault she hasn’t started working yet.

Losing a family member, losing a source of income, and losing a creative outlet have taken its toll on us. Yet, it has certainly given me prospective.

For those of you who don’t know. I work 12-9pm and part of my job is actually live streaming online sales. I go live and interact with our audience for 3 hours (6pm-9pm), making sells to our viewers. Now, with a daughter who is a year and half old, it was getting hard to get home around 10pm and say “Yeah, I want to go live for a few more hours” when I’d rather see my family. These are more factors that have led me to not being active on here.

I want to come back. I want to hone in on my skills outside of work, such as editing and writing. So, I want to start incorporating these hobbies back into my life in a healthy way. Where I don’t get burned out or feel like it is dragging me away from my family.

So just know I’m working on several blog post such as: a new Manga Monday, The Games I’ve Played Recently, Ranking My Favorite Alolan forms (that’ll probably become a series of sorts), and Ranking the next Super Mario 64 course.

So those are what I have in mind. Please follow the blog and stay tuned for more content!

Thank you for reading! Have a great day!

Trying to Get Back in the Groove!

Hey guys! This post isn’t going to be anything special. I’m just trying to get back in the habit of blogging.

I might work on getting a Games I Played Recently post going. As I have been playing a ton of Zelda and Star Wars. I can also post a Manga haul as well as a video game What Not Haul.

So, those may be some posts to keep your eye out on. As far as animes go, I’ve just been slowly chipping away at One Piece. Though, I’ve mostly be watching the NBA playoffs.

Alright. That’s all I got for today! Thanks for reading!

A Creative Pitfall.

Hey guys! I love blogging on here. But every since I had my daughter that has gotten tougher. When we had our daughter, we went to a single income household. That didn’t make life easy for the first few months adjusting to that new lifestyle. At the same time, my job reduced its staff almost in half. We lost 3 retail employees and a warehouse employee. What did this mean for me? The guy who handled our online inventory? Suddenly, I had to pick up shifts downstairs on the retail floor. I had to cover lunch breaks. On the warehouse side of things, I was still putting on the same amount of inventory. Only now, we had one less pair of hands to pull and ship. So, a few days out of the week, I would have to go over to the warehouse to assist them. Basically, I went from 1 single focused job to being split into 3 different departments.

As Covid has shriveled up people’s disposable income, we’ve had to get creative with how we sell items and generate extra income. This meant turning to Whatnot to sell comics. I now stream 4 days a week for us on top of the other 3 departments I help out in. Trust me, I actually thrive here, and it’s not too much of a burden to juggle all these things. However, when I get home, I just want to focus on family. I still play games, watch shows, and read Mangas and Comics. The main difference now is that I don’t always feel like writing and scripting in-depth blogs about the matters. My recording setup has also become clunky at best. All this cuts into setting time aside for blogs and YouTube videos.

Lastly, I’m trying to switch from a consumer to a saver. This means I don’t want to be forking over money to keep up with the latest items to do reviews and such. A lot of my free time is going into looking into personal finances. I also realize I need a paying side hustle/side job. I fought that idea for a while because it felt counterintuitive. If I start putting all this time into a side hustle, that’s time away from my family. Which would be the antithesis of what I’m trying to accomplish. However, I’ve given so much of myself to my current job. I have more questions than answers about it’s long-term future. I want a more diverse skill set than the one I have here at work.

Long story short, I want to start blogging again- but as a hobby. I tried really hard to monetize it. To help justify it. I tried to pump out quality content while being pulled in a lot of different directions. It got to a point where the posts I was just putting out there were subpar and short. It may take me a while to find the balance of enjoying the content I’m making again without it feeling like a second job.

Here’s to hoping something productive will come out of this. If not, this will always be my little corner of the internet to vent and document my life.

Thanks for reading. Having a great day!

Life Update 8/17/2022

Life Update

I haven’t been able to post a lot lately. You may be thinking it has something to do with my newborn daughter. You’d be right, to an extent anyway.

My daughter has a weird sleep schedule. She sleeps from 3am to some time in the afternoon. Not straight, though. As she’ll wake up every so often to breastfeed. As a result. She’s often asleep when I’m home in the morning. I work 12-9pm. Factor in the 45 minute commute and the only time I see her, awake anyway, is when I get home around 10pm.

It use to be I’d get home and work on blogs or videos or whatever needed to be done. Now I get home, eat dinner and suddenly it’s 11 and I’m just now able to play with my daughter. So, naturally, that cuts into time I put into videos and blogs.

I work a pretty stress free job. I had some down time and could work on blogs at work and turn them into videos at home. Recently I got a $4 raise for added responsibility. As a result, a lot of my down time at work has gotten used up by my time in other departments.

I have videos and streams planned, I just need to get my time management back right. As priorities and necessities have evolved and changed over the last four months.

But I like to make these life update post every now and then, so here we are.

I will say, one my favorite new hobbies is investing. Now, I work a very modest pay rate. And since Jessica and I just had our daughter, we are a single income family. As a result, we don’t have tens of thousands of dollars lying around. My boss invest and he got me to start. So, I’ll leave my Robinhood referral link below. With it, you can start investing and we can both get a free stock!

So, I’ve got some video game pick ups, TCG unboxings, and some top fives planned. So please stick around as I try to get back in the groove!

Thank you anyone who read or will read these post

What a Crazy 10 Days! (We’re Parents Now)

And finally Jessica had her birthday on the 24th. I finally have my own family and I love them dearly. I took a week off to be with them. Today I returned to work. Anyway, were excited to see where our life goes from here.
