Manga Monday: Rebirth Vol 1 Review
Rebirth was written and illustrated by Woo. It was brought stateside by TokyoPop. Rebirth originally debuted in 1998.
Spoilers: Just ones covering this volume and not the series as a whole.
Plot: Over 300 hundred years ago a powerful vampire named Deshwitat loses a fight and is sealed away but not before his love, Lilith, dies. Flash forward to today (or well 1998, but you know what I mean) and we meet a handful of professors. Our main professor is named Shangho Do and him and his daughter, Remi Do, are visiting a few doctors. You can tell Woo loved some Resident Evil. The two doctors are named Dr. Chris Redfield and Dr. Leon Kennedy. I love it. Well, things go awry when these demonesque creatures emerge and start killing the doctors. Remi is innocent and when her blood spills on the demons it breaks the seal unleashing Deshwitat from his imprisonment.
This is when the drama begins. Let me introduce Millenear Shephield real quick. She is a pretty cool exorcist trying to help the doctors fight the demons. Okay, so Deshwitat is too weak to fight the demons since he has been in a suspended state for 300 years. Shangho actually sacrifices himself to Deshwitat to strengthen him. In return, Deshwitat kills all the demons and sets out for revenge against those who killed his beloved Lilith. However, he needs Millenear to teach him light magic. Remi, naturally so, wants revenge against Deshwitat for killing her dad. (Yes, her dad sacrificed himself to save all three of them, but oh well.) The catch is, Reni has to wait for Deshwitat to die or her dad will come back as an eternal vampire.
I don’t know if I did the best job explaining the plot, but it is really good for a story about vampires.
Characters:
Deshwitat- He is the main character and is a vampire endowed with dark magic. He is absent for most of the manga as he floats in limbo until the seal is broken. I’m led on to believe we get to know more about him in later volumes and that he will be quite interesting. As of right now, he is a cool, strong lead who seems to be morally gray. He is bent on defeating his enemies and avenging his love. Standard stuff, cool design.
Remi Do- You got to feel for her. She didnt want to take the trip with her dad. Then, monsters attack. Finally, her dad dies to said monsters. It is brutal world sometimes. She was pretty enjoyable and you relate for her at times. She is tagging along Deshwitat’s quest as she hopes to kill him in the end and save her father.
Millenear- Her character honestly seemed random. We are introduced to her as her car breaks down. Though she feels the evil appearing and makes quick haste on foot to the doctors. Her purpose is later revealed as the person who will train Deshwitat in the ways of light magic. She is devout and a strong believer in her faith. So far there isn’t too much more to add to her character at this point.
The World: This world is just like ours except with light and dark magic. Demons are real and attacking. Vampires are real as well. Again, think earth but with supernatural and hyper-realistic religious ideas.
Recap: It takes a little bit to get going but is never bad.
Action: Yes sir (or lady).
Romance: Well, Deshwitat had a wife but she is dead so… there’s that.
Plot: Seems pretty typical of the vampire genre, but it is enjoyable.
Characters: A nice bunch. I liked them when they were on the panels but time will tell how memorable they are.
The World: It is standard for books like this. We will see if they dive more into lore and such that could make it stand out.
Humor: While it had it’s moments, I don’t remember this being particularly funny. In a lot of ways this is a story about love and what lengths we would go to for revenge if we lost them.
Verdict: Again, nothing groundbreaking. It is more so just a solid story through the first volume. The characters are good, the dialogue is good, and the action is solid.
Score: 8 out of 10. It is definitely worth reading the first volume to see what you think.

Somali and the Forest Spirit Episode 1 Review!
Somali and the Forest Spirit is a brand new anime based off the manga of the same name. It is available on Crunchyroll.

Spoilers: None really as this is the first episode.
Plot: Set in an alternative reality where humans are nearly instinct, the story picks up by introducing the forest spirit, Golem. While venturing in his forest, he stumbles across a human girl, Somali. Title sequence, fast forward, bam, the two have now formed a duo. Not much more information is given beyond that. However, Golem does reveal later on that they are on a quest for more humans. This quest is a little strange. For starters, a side characters comments something to the effect of, “I didnt think you spirits left your forest.”. Couple that with the fact Golem is void of emotions and always tries to think logically, it appears to be an uncharacteristic behavior. I wanted to set up the plot but I want to dive more into this during our “character” portion.
Characters: Lets focus on the primary two. We will start with Somali. Her name is listed first, but from the first episode I don’t see her has the main character, that would be Golem in my opinion so far. She is one of the last remaining humans. Golem finds her shackled in the woods for some reason. In the city they visit, characters made mention of keeping humans as pets, but the show never tells us why she is in the woods. Despite not knowing her parents and being held against her will, Somali is a very fun loving and free kind of person. She is often distracted by the pets, which by the way, animals are now humanoid and are the main inhabitants of the world. This offbeat, carelessness gets her in trouble. By the end of the episode, I cannot really say she’s undergone any form of change. She even utters the say line from one of the early scenes.
Golem, on the other hand, is very straightforward, logical, and systematic. Every move is very well thought out and often correct. There’s a lot to break down and love about his character. From the early scenes of the show, he is lead on to be a machine, basically. He is void of emotion. He is stubborn. He is unwavering in his decisions. I say all of this, and yet, he undergoes so much change in the first episode. I’m actually really impressed. For starters, Golem is untrusting of the species living in the village. He fears they want Somali (he is probably right, too). He clamps his hand over her mouth and tells her not to be loud as he listens to people walk by their room. Him having no emotions is brought back up and Somali says something along the lines of, “I could feel you shaking. You can’t fool me.”. I dont remember the exact quote but it basically was saying that when he thought Somali might be in danger, it caused him to have feelings.
Secondly, while walking around the market district, Golem noticed all the parents holding onto their kids. I really liked this scene. Initially, the scene looks like it is being experienced through Somali’s eyes. This made me feel sad for Somali on account of her not having parents. By the end of it, you realize Golem was actually paying attention to how the parents interacted with their kids. All this leads up to is them holding hands (um, fingers?), but it will be more powerful once you actually watch the episode. \
The World: Oh, boy. Considering I think the aspect of humans being nearly exist is kinda over done, this show reinvigorated the genre for me. The forest scenery is beautiful. The animals of the world are brand new species as it appears as if cross breeding has occurred. You’ll have cats with 5 tails, rabbits with antlers, a butterfly on two legs. Every character is a new species and that makes it fun getting introduced to new characters. So far, we’ve only seen one forest and one city.
Recap: 2020 anime is getting started on a good foot. This is a great anime to start your year off.
Action: So far, sparingly. Though, as they get deeper into their hunt for humans, I wouldn’t be surprised if action came up from time to time.
Romance: Our main characters are a forest spirit with no emotions and a child. In other words,
Plot: Didn’t overly care for it before. Now I am very interested in seeing where it goes.
Characters: For two characters that seem shallow up front, I think they are very good characters that will have surprising depth by the end.
The World: Cannot wait to see other places there are to explore.
The Humor: This show is about personal relationships and the journeys we take together, but it can be funny.
The Ending: Maybe one of the best endings to an episode one I’ve ever seen. It does more than make we say “I cannot wait for episode two.”. It also shows growth in our main character right from the start and makes this story that much more enjoyable.
Verdict: Obviously we cannot grade the entire season on one episode, but this is about a promising start as there is. I will be tuning in weekly to see this one develop.
Score: 9.75 out of 10. Remember I’m grading this based off of episode one. I’m not saying the season will remain this strong. I’m just saying that as an introduction, you’d be hard pressed to find one that does it better.

Games that COULD come to the Nintendo Switch this year! (2020)
Real quick. Dont feel like reading a long article? This discussion exist in video form too on my Youtube channel.
Okay so 2020 has kicked off and people are already speculating on if some Wii U games will be ported to the Switch. So let’s have some fun and look at games that might be coming to the Switch.
Now believe it or not I actually tried to use some logic with this list. I looked at what people were wanting ported over so I knew there was at least interest in these games, plus the likelihood and how easy it was to port over these games were. Did Nintendo stand to gain anything from the effort, how would they control on the Switch and so on and so forth. Now here’s the tricky thing. I dont think the Switch needs a whole lot of Wii U ports, so while I’ll be making a case for I’ll have arguments against most of these games. So let’s take a look at my list.
#1 This, in my opinion, is easily the strongest candidate of them all. Super Mario 3D World. What? Super Mario 3D World is a gem. I got it basically when I got my Wii U and I wont go too much into detail in this blog but I do have a new found appreciation for this game. Correct me if I am wrong but i don’t believe Nintendo has any Mario games lined up the Switch right now which blows my mind. We’ve carved through the Tennis Mario, the Rabbid Mario, The Odyssey Mario, The New Super Mario Bros, The Party Mario and the Kart Mario so now are waiting for Odyssey 2. This would be a great holdover. I’ve heard people mention Color Splash but A, that game is dependent on the Gamepad (after talking to myself, I dont think it relies on the Gamepad) and B. I thought people didnt like it? I could be wrong there.
#2. Nintendo Land. Okay, Okay. I have officially lost my mind. This goes against all my rules. But hey, It’s a great game. And if I hadnt lost you already, I just did. I thoroughly enjoyed my time with Nintendo Land but again, Nintendo, I believes, wants to give you the option to play in handheld mode exclusively which, just wouldnt work for Nintendo Land. It’s too dependant on the Gamepad and probably wont happen. The game may need some reworking around the need for the Gamepad, but I wouldnt be opposed to picking it up again on the Switch if it retailed for say 20 bucks and featured new Minigames and such. Maybe to reflect Bayonetta and Astral Chain, Wonderful 101, Tokyo Mirage Sessions as well as Splatoon.

#3 Wonderful 101- Again you’re going to see a constant theme of games needing to be reworked. I think Nintendo and Platinum have something to gain from this release and honestly, maybe it should be my number 2 instead but oh well, the script as already been created. Either way, Wonderful 101 is beloved but it is also stuck on the Wii U which just had such a lower install base. Now, to my knowledge, Platinum Games has been hard at work on Bayonetta 3 following Astral Chain. So I’m not sure if Platinum games would be over seeing the port or how that works. If that’s the case, I’m not sure how badly Platinum would want to allocate resources to porting it over. However, it did sale well, a new age of fans would be crying for Wonderful 102 or whatever they decide to call it.
4. Pikmin 3. The first game on the list I have never played. So I cannot speak to how dependent on the Gamepad this game is. Regardless, I kind of disregarded this port considering all of the talk about Pikmin 4. Also, Ive heard people say they would prefer a Trilogy much in the way Metroid Fans are clamoring for. However, if we dont get the trilogy the more and more I write this the more I think this could be a solid port. Pikmin 4 looks like it is taking longer than expected so giving us Pikmin 3 remastered could solve a lot of issues. A. it would tide over Pikmin fans while finishing up Pikmin 4. B. It would introduce a new generation to Pikmin. Pikmin 1 and 2 came out on the Gamecube and a lot of hardcore players jumped off the Nintendo bandwagon with the Wii meaning plenty of people could have missed the 3rd installment after loving the first 2.
#5. Star Fox. What can I say? I enjoy Star Fox even if I’ve never been into shoot em ups. Again, how dependent are you on the Gamepad? For Star Fox. Entirely. The Wii U Gamepad provides a cockpit view. There’s no way to have the Switch provide the same view while also being docked. This game needs a remaster, desperately, but it probably needs to be reworked. If they do it right this could spark interest in a new Star Fox sequel which is never a bad thing.
So there’s my list. Trust me I know there’s better games. Splatoon for example is not very dependent on the Gamepad as it just serves as a map. Move that up to the TV screen or do away with it entirely and you’re golden. Just not sure if they do this since we already have Splatoon 2 and I think most would prefer Splatoon 3 over a remake of the first. Its the same problem with the other 2 Zelda games. Who wants to re-buy those games for a 3rd time when Skyward Sword is still trapped on the Wii? So I think Mario 3D World and Pikmin have the most realistic shot even if I didnt order them that way. Either way, let me know what games you guys want to see ported over. I really dont think the Switch needs anymore, but they’re probably coming none the less.
The Mandalorian Review
Alright, everybody, The Mandalorian has finished its first season and appears well on it’s away to becoming a cultural mainstay. Let’s discuss it.
SPOILERS: Some for the early episodes, not too many for the later episodes.
Let’s first begin with Star Wars as a whole. I thought it was very weird to launch a Star Wars show during the hype of Episode 9. Maybe it was smart. I don’t know. The Mandalorian seemed very much intended for die hard fans as well as casuals. There were references to the events of the OG movies, but seeing the movies that predicated the show doesn’t seem like a requirement to enjoy The Mandalorian. Now, this seems smart as Baby Yoda, as dubbed by the community, grappled in plenty of new people who didn’t care about the franchise. You got to remember this was a launch title for Disney Plus. Meaning thousands of people tuned into this show just because they bought the streaming site for Disney originals.
My favorite Star Wars film is Episode 4 A New Hope. Several of the films that follow it may be more epic, but the cast was perfect for this first go round. The writing was great. This film was set in a very dire time, yet there was still plenty of humor and fun characters. I say all of this to say I feel similarly about The Mandalorian as I do about Star Wars Episode 4. I’m not saying the series is better than the movie, just that this was a very, very strong showing.
Characters: For the characters, we will focus on the main two. The Mandalorian, which is referred to as Mando for most of the show, and the child, referred to as Baby Yoda by the community but I will refer to him as the child from here on out. Depending on who you are, one of these two characters made the show for you.
For me, that was Mando. He is such an interesting character. He is tasked with recovering the child from another planet. Mando is successful but instead of honoring his mission to return the child, he proceeds to steal the child back from his original client. This seeks off a season long game of hide and seek. To understand why this action on Mando’s part is so strange, you first have to understand Mando. Mando is a bounty hunter who belongs to two creeds. The Mandalorians and the Bounty Hunter Guild. Mando is a very honorable(if I can use such a word to describe a bounty hunter) man due to the fact he swears to uphold both of the two factions rules. He also values money more than most other things, or at least that is how the first episode perceives him. So, for him to forsake the mission, betray the Bounty Hunters Guild, and sacrifice all the money he would have earned, it is just so uncharacteristic of what we are taught to expect of him.
Sadly, I can’t recall the show ever deep diving into why Mando does this. The only explanation I can justify is through flashbacks. Mando, as a small child, is rescued by Mandalorians and raised in their faction. There’s a nice parallel scene of Mando as a child clinging to a Mandalorian as they jetpack off his planet, which is being ravaged by droids and than of Mando as an adult with the child clinging to him as he jetpacks both of them off of their current planet, Nevarro.
The child is the other character most people fell in love with. He is adorable and without ever uttering one word captured the hearts of many. He goes through character development but not in the traditional since which is why it is hard to gauge him. The child can randomly use the Force to aid Mando and himself throughout their adventures. At times, this feels a little Deus ex Machina. Mando’s losing to a Mudhorn. How will he survive, lets have the child Force levitate it in the air buying Mando time. That’s just one example, but it occurs ever so often. What stops it from being annoying is often it doesn’t work and Mando has to outmaneuver varies foes. Short of that though, I didn’t see any discernible growth on behalf of the child. It isn’t so much a flaw or complaint as much as it is an observation. The child is very likable from the get-go and stays that way. They didn’t ruin the character in any way and, as far as I am concerned, they left a lot of interest in what he will ultimately become.
Plot: I touched base on the main point of the plot in the above sections, so we will not dwell too much here. The Mandalorian is tasked to go retrieve the child. Upon doing so, he double crosses his client and the rest of the series is other characters trying to kill Mando and bring back the child. It is very simple but very good.
The World: Well, it is a Star Wars show, so we actually bounce around about 4 or so planets. The main one is Nevarro. It has a form of civilization hosting a bounty hunters guild and a group of Mandalorians. However, it takes place after Episode 6 so the planet looks like a wasteland at times. None of the other planets get more than one maybe two episodes of screen time. The forest planet of Sorgan stands out as a cool planet, but again it only gets one episode.
Recap: This show is great for first time viewers, casuals, and die hards all alike. If you are invested in Star Wars, you’ll love the references to the old movies and shows. If you are completely new here, the story is not dependent on massive Star Wars lore. It is a great starting point just to get someone introduced to the setting and writing of most Star Wars films.
Action: Plenty. I love how the Storm troopers allow for massive amounts of violent while also keeping it PG.
Romance: I can honestly say it is almost noexistent which is very weird to say. One episode hints at a potential love interest, but Mando’s line of work kills any kind of hope of romance. Though, if you aren’t careful Baby Yoda will steal your girl.
Plot: At times, the episodes feel like typical TV show episodes. There’s nothing wrong with this because they are so darn enjoyable.
Characters: A+. Many of the characters still need more developing in the future, but all were enjoyable and great at their roles.
The World: One of the biggest shames is that we didnt explore more worlds or stay on the ones we did go to longer. It probably would have detracted from the narrative. But I hope Season 2 looks into more of the worlds out there.
Humor: Not it’s strongest suit, the humor was still there for a few good laughs.
The Ending: Near perfection, honestly.
Verdict: I’ll just quote Jessica here. “So, when do you want to rewatch it?”
Score: Against maybe my better judgment I’m going 9 out 10. This score could retroactively go up or down depending on season two, as some stuff is unresolved or underdeveloped. But just judging it against itself it was worth every bit of my watch time. I highly recommend it.
Latest Pokemon Sword and Shield Update.
Back in the earlier days of the blog, doing updates on Sun and Moon were some of my favorite post. Discovering more about the regions, learning of new Pokemons, it sure was a Poke-Good time. Well, today we got some news so lets look at it, shall we?
Galar form pokemons.
By my research, I’ve seen three old Pokemons receive Galar forms. Check em out!
If I am being completely honest here, I didnt care for any of these Pokemons. Of their base forms, Weezing is my favorite. Of the Galar forms, Weezing is still my favorite for the steam punk vibe. Some interesting takeaways here are so far no koffin though it is probably implied. Secondly, Weezing’s second ability is hidden
New Pokemons
These two guys are Morpeko and Obstagoon respectively. Morpeko is clearly just a Pikachu knockoff. Now, while this is not a bad thing, I haven’t truly cared for a Pikachu inspired Pokemon since Pichu (so basically none this century). But this doesnt mean Morpeko is bad as much as it means it is underwhelming. The type change is really neat and I’ll give them credit for experimenting some. Obstagoon is awesome. Not much more too say since not that much was revealed.
Rivals
As far as rivals go, I was bit underwhelmed. Bede has potential to be one of those classic rivals but I’m not holding my breath. They will probably be a better rival than Hau, but that is not saying much (if anything, really.) Than there’s Marnie and Team Yell. I get it from a world prospective since competition seems to be a big aspect its only natural for their to be fans, but I hope these aren’t the bad guys of this region.

Girlish Number- Random Wednesday Number 1
It’s finally time to launch a series I first hinted at over three years ago! If you need a breakdown over what this concept is, check out my post here.
Girlish Number is an anime inspired by the serial novel of the same name back in 2016.
With further ado, here’s my thoughts.
Spoilers: None, really.
Genre: Slice of Life.
Synopsis: Girlish Number is a pleasant diversion from the typical anime I watch. It centers around the main character, Chitose Karasuma. A peppy energetic teenager aspiring to make it big in the acting world. However, she is stuck with low-level voice acting jobs such as one liner gigs (she even comments on how she is a thief because she gets paid to say just one line.). Along the way we meet more popular and successful actress who I assume will be more involved as the ladies star together in a big upcoming show. The episode ends with Chitose finally landing a leading role. Could it be the big break she has always wanted?
Verdict: So I wont be assigning a score like in traditional reviews. Instead, I will discuss if I am likely to continue watching the series. And despite what I assumed going into the show based solely on the name, I am actually very intrigued to continue watching this show. The colors are bright and keep you engaged. Chitose is actually an enjoyable character to lead the show. There is also a dude.
If I finish the series, I will do a more in-depth review. In the meantime, if you have seen Girlish Number, let me know what you thought. I cannot ask for recommendations because it will be random.
Manga Monday: My Hero Academia Volume 2!
Today, we do a first here on Dahubbz. We return to a series for a follow up manga review. We will be looking at My Hero Academia Volume 2. So, if you haven’t read my review of volume 1, check that out here.
Spoilers: Spoilers for Volume 2 of course, but no major spoilers for the series itsef.
So what does Volume 2 do to improve upon the foundation of Volume 1? A lot, I would say.
The Plot: This is one area I would give a B for improvement. Honestly, Volume 1 kinda showed us what was up, so there didn’t need to be a lot revealed or added to the plot in this volume. The characters progress through their training protocols which include team battles and a planned rescue mission. The big addition here are the villains. Sometimes I struggle to fully grasp whats going on due to the nature of black and white art. That is true here. This means I’m not 100% sure what all the villains do, but they come off as being a threat we should take series.
Characters: Easily where the show improved the most. We got to meet or get a better understanding of soooo many characters it would be hard to keep track of everyone. Here we first meet the League of Villains (This name seems to imply, like with other examples in the first two volumes, that the series is heavily influenced by Western Comic Books.). Tomura Shigaraki stands out for design more than function, as I am not even entirely sure what he does.

But his associates more than make up for it with their quirks.
The gang literally takes on a giant shadow whose quirk is akin to opening portals.
As for heroes, so many were on display here. Tsuyu Asui, a frog lady. Momo Yaoyorozu who can create countless new creations just by knowing their chemical make up. Denki Kaminari, the power of electricity. We also explore Izuku, Bakugo, Iida, and Uraraka’s quirk a little more in depth. Shoto Todoroki is still kind of a mystery but I suspect he will be a big player in the future.
The World: You could argue this section actually took a hit. Instead of the whole world being a sandbox, we are now confound to the school of U.A. This isn’t completely bad due to the fact I’m pretty sure we will eventually graduate and move past the school, thus opening up the world. For the school itself it is really cool. The book shows there is more than just super heroes here which is neat. A plus for the world is we finally saw some upper tiered villains and that is exciting.
Recap
Action: This volume really steps up the action. If Volume 1 was lacking in that department to you, this volume makes up for it.
Romance– I stand by nothing major has happened. My money would still be on Izuku and Uraraka, but now Izuku and Tsuyu have teamed up I suppose that is always an option.
Plot– The plot has been progressed slightly through trials and villains emerging.
Characters: Gotta stand by A+. Honestly, I feel like this category improved the most despite already being an A+.
The World: The world still hasn’t been fleshed out, but the school has potential for the time being.
Humor: Again, this is something the book does very well.
Verdict: “A near perfect introduction Manga. It showcases the potential for interesting characters, sly humor, possible love subplots, and intense action scenes. It serves as a great origin manga” Me when discussing Volume 1.
Yeah, I just feel like this is a better Volume 1 and if I enjoyed Volume 1 a lot, I’m going to enjoy this volume as well.
Score: 9.2 out of 10. Again I feel like this a step in the right direction but I’m hesitant to give it a much higher score. We’ve moved past the grind/level up formula for now (No doubt it will return when a bigger threat arrives, I’m sure!). That time instead was invested in awesome fight scenes and character development. So far the show is smart with it’s situations, obstacles, and character creation making each new challenge a joy to see how the characters figure out a way to survive.
I’m getting early Naruto vibes, which to me is never a bad thing. For starters we finally got the heated rivalry battle of Izuku and Bakugo. It was satisfying for a round 1 duel when I know they will throw down again. Characters have teamed up for simulations just like Naruto’s Team 7. And we get a very early look at a potential world threat in Tomura Shigaraki whose similar in role to Orochimaru.
This is definitely a series we will be revisiting for Volume 3. So stayed tune!

After a pretty long haitus from anime reviews, Crunchyroll and Facebook have teamed up to pull me right back in. Dr. Stone is an ongoing anime based on the manga of the same name. The anime is done by the studio TMS and airs on both Crunchyroll and Funimation.

Spoilers: This is a review of episode one. While there may be spoilers for episode 1, there’s no major spoilers for the series as a whole.
Plot: The idea here is that everyone on Earth gets turned to stone. Some 3,000 years later our two main characters breakthrough their stony exterior emerging to a world where forestry has now overrun the area. Thousands have died as their stone bodies have shattered or limbs have been severed off. Once our two main characters, Senku and Taiju reunite at the base of a river, the two go to work on how to bring the world back to the modern era.
Characters: This section is fairly easy, as they are the only two human beings alive at the moment. Senku is our green headed main character. He is a genius and the show makes that no secret. He has already begun working on a cure for the modern day stone age. I really think people who study psychology and character types would have a field day enjoying him. It’s not really revealed in the first episode, but later you will see he does not play judge, jury, or the hangman. He acts almost like neutral watcher. He wants to revive everyone. Good, bad, murderers, tax collectors, children, bums, it does not matter. I assume this is due to the fact that science really does not take sides. He’s just letting the process run it’s course.
Our next character is Taiju. Taiju is a bit more of a flat and uninteresting character. Now, that is in no way to say he a bad character. He kept himself motivated to live because he had a mission. Before the stone age struck, He was determined to tell his crush Yuzuriha, that he liked her. Of course, tragedy struck as both stone-crossed lovers were soon to be sealed in their rocky casing. But hey, his unwavering desire to confess his feelings for Yuzuriha worked because, well… It is an anime after all.
Now, I’m not sure if this a good or bad thing, but the show is super self-aware of the two character’s strength and weakness. Again the show is not shy about constantly reminding you Senku is an intellectual supreme while Taiju wouldn’t know the difference between a push or pull door even if they were labeled. As a result the show has a stereotypical, albeit funny, role system for the two. Senku comes up with ideas while Taiju goes to hunt down the ingredients needed. The two play off each other’s differences in a way that naturally progresses the plot while also being funny and enjoyable such as the grapes to wine scene for example.
The World: This is also easy. There essentially is no world to discuss here. Mother Nature has come to reclaim most of her land. Some statues have survived the test of nature and time, but they are few and far between. Animals, for some unknown reason, were spared the same crystallized fate the humans experienced, birds notwithstanding for some reason. This is part of the fun though. How will Senku and Taiju interact with animals? Will they find remains of old buildings they use to interact with? Are there others who have shattered their mold and now walk with the living again? How will the world react to a sudden rise in the human population again? Ultimately, the world right now is a blank canvas and I cannot wait to see how Dr. Stone splatters itself all over the page.
Racap: I knew this was the anime I wanted use to rekindle my spark. This premise sounded super enjoyable and I have not been disappointed. I’ve watched the first three episodes as of now and it really keeps getting better.
Action: While nonexistent in this episode. Episodes two and three do help deliver more of a punch.
Romance: Taiju clearly has a crush on Yuzuriha but you will have to keep watching to see if they end up together.
Plot: I came for the plot.
Characters: But I stayed for the characters.
The World: Empty and underdeveloped, but that isn’t exactly a bad thing.
Humor: A definite strength and high point of the show is the humor. For a pseudo-apocalyptic world, these two really don’t let that fact stop them from smiling or cutting up.
The Ending: The ending is great as we see they have possibly cracked the code for cracking open that hard outer shell.
Verdict: While this is episode one of a show that currently only has four episodes out, I’d be lying if I didn’t say the hype is there. It is going to be so fun to see what’s left of the world. If Senku and Taiju have shed their rock skin, whose to say other’s could not? How will differing viewpoints of Senku and people he resurrects clash? The world is currently empty which hurts this episode’s score but I think makes me more excited for the show as a whole.
Score: A solid 8.5 out of 10. Mostly, because there are still so many question marks that is hard to get a perfect score.
