Manga Monday: The Way of the Househusband Volume #1

Today we are reviewing a manga I have wanted to review for a few years now. From the second I saw this manga, I knew I would review it one day. During my college days, Jessica was the one working while I stayed in school. It felt like it was made for me, haha. The Way of the Househusband was written by Kousuke Oono and published by Viz Media.

The Way of the Househusband tracks the daily life of Tatsu, a former Yakuza member. Tatsu was ruthless during his gang days, earning him the name “The Immortal Dragon”. However, those days are far behind him. He has turned his life around. His wife is now a hot shot business lady. As a result, he tends to everything around the house. He cleans the house. He prepares his wife’s lunch. He buys the groceries. If it needs to be done, he does it without question, with unwavering pride and honor of his wife. It is truly respectable. He was at the top of his game, the most respected and feared man in the gang scene. Yet, he walked away from it all to protect what was precious to him.

Look at this guy

Plot: This is a very fast past manga. Most chapters hover around 14 pages but feel shorter than that. Each chapter is simply a day in the life of. The opening chapter is literally Tatsu getting pulled over for trying to get his wife’s lunch to her (as she forgot it at home rushing out the door). Another chapter centers around Tatsu shopping for a present for his wife’s birthday. There’s some chapters revolving around running into former gang members, both rivals and allies. The mundane, daily life chapters use the absurd irony of a yakuza member doing all these innocent task to generate its humor. The gang chapters have a certain way of playing out. Tatsu runs into his former ally and a rival gang at the same time. Tatsu is easily the scariest guy in the room. The humor here is that Tatsu could kill anyone in the scenes at the snap of the finger, but he’s the only one not looking to fight. This gets all the people involved in some weird situations.

Characters: The Way of the House Husband features 3 main characters (and a revolvong door of rival gang members); Tatsu, the house husband, Masa, Tatsu’s former ally, members of the rival gang who appear in a few episodes, and Miku, Tatsu’s wife. The gang member isn’t really fleshed out super well. He shows up to cause trouble and creates some irony and humor. Masa appears in a few chapters. He idolizes Tatsu as a rock star in the gang scene. He looks up to Tatsu. Masa studies Tatsu believing the way of the house husband is the way the way of the yakuza. He honestly does help provide a nice change of pace for the settings and situation of the individual chapters. Tatsu is always trying to be efficient with his time and purposeful with his task. Masa helps throw in curveballs that set up some wacky adventures for the two. Not much is known about Miku other than she is a successful businesswoman and that she loves Policure.

The World: I won’t waste time here. It is just Japan through the eyes of a once murderous gang lord turned awkward house husband.

This is a great page turner. The chapters are fast paced, off the wall and pretty light hearted most of the of the time. It has a nice blend of slapstick humor, situational irony and just general goofiness. Nothing here is too deep. This means I strongly recommend it for people looking for a good comedy that doesnt take itself too serious. If that sounds like a good time, you should definitely check it out!

So, let me know what mangas I should do next? Are you going to check this one out? Let me know in the comments below!

Manga Monday: Manga Haul! 10 Zatch Bell Volumes and Plenty More!

Hey everybody! Today’s post is another manga haul! Jessica and I recently went on our honey moon down to St. Augustine, Florida. While we were down there, we grabbed a ton of manga. Check it out!

As you can see, I scored quite a bit of Zatch Bell. Volumes 1-10 to be exact. This is so awesome for several reasons. For starters, I loved Zatch Bell as a kid. The anime anyway. I never read the manga. So I’m excited to give it a shot. Secondly, I bought this as a bundle. So I did not need to scour the web looking for each volume and I didn’t even have to pay shipping since it was in a local store. Shout out to Ancient City Toys in St. Augustine! For those wondering, Zatch Bell is now my 4th most collected manga series in just 1 purchase. Not bad!

The next round of pictures depicts mostly Jessica’s books. She took a shot on the Dot Hack Legend of the Twilight Volumes 1 and 2. She was only going to get volume 1 but I reminded her how hard it is to get mangas without resorting to the internet so she got the second one while we were there. Next she got Mahoromatic Volume 1. I also told her to get volume 2 of it for the same reason. Some how she forgot to grab it.

The last four books were bought at the local 2nd and Charles in St. Augustine. Two were mine. Two were Jessica. Jessica bought two discounted mangas named Fairy Tale Battle Royale (Sounds intense) and Faeries’ Landing (Doesn’t sound nearly as intense). I don’t know the first thing about these books.
I bought a discounted manga for myself, Dragon Drive. I also don’t know much about it. It does, however, look awesome. It will surely show up as a Manga Monday review soon enough. Lastly, I got The Way of the House Husband. This book sounds awesome. It stars a retired gangster member turned stay at home husband. This was a running joke with Jessica and myself as I was a full time student while she worked.

So there you have it! I think a pretty awesome, sound group of mangas that I am pumped to get around to.

Thank you all for reading! Have a great day!
